Modern corneal grafting procedures
Imagine replacing the corneal transplant operation with a twenty minute outpatient procedure that does not require any stitches or local anesthetic injections. This is now possible for many patients. Instead of removing the whole thickness of the cornea, and suturing a new donor cornea into position, we can now replace just the inner layer of cells and achieve an even better result with minimal healing time. It is like replacing the wallpaper instead of the whole wall. The patient can go home right after surgery without having to wear an eye patch.
While nothing in medicine is risk free, newer procedures greatly increase the safety and effectiveness of corneal rehabilitation for suitable candidates.
